چکیده

Representativeness is a desirable trying to fill the gaps in current protected areas with additional areas only complementarity performed property of conservation networks. In this paper an attempt is made to assess the efficiency of current better than choosing areas at random. Both rarity and richness hotspots gave worse results. Opportunistic conservation networks in Portugal in representing vertebrates (reptiles and amphibians) and plants administrative criteria such as supplementing the PAS with other conservation areas (CORINE Biotopes) (gymnosperms, pteridophytes and bryophytes). It was found that whilst the protected areas do not sample without taking into account their contribution to a representation goal was nearly half as good as choosing all species in the database they provide a better result than choosing areas at random. For the goal of areas at random. The results recall for the need of explicit goals and accountable methods in area selection maximizing representation of taxa per unit area hotspots and complementarity performed better. A for conservation and reinforce the role of complementarity for finding additional areas to pattern of over-representation of vertebrates in relation to lower plants was discovered among selected protected areas when limited resources are available for ‘in situ’ conservation. conservation areas in Portugal suggesting that charismatic organisms with large home ranges may not always be the most appropriate surrogates for

Distribution patterns and diversity of Onosma in Iran: with emphasis on endemism conservation and distribution pattern in SW Asia

Geobotanical assessment of taxa with a high percentage of richness and endemism plays an important role on conservation plans. South-West Asia is one of the main biodiversity centers of the genus Onosma (Boraginaceae) comprising a high rate of species richness and endemism in Iran. Due to existing threatened factors to habitats and lack of sufficient data on conservation and distribution patter...

Faunistic Inventory of Spheciformes Wasps at Three Protected Areas in Portugal

The importance of considering insects in the protection of biodiversity has been recently recognized. However, despite the importance of Spheciformes wasps (Hymenoptera: Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae) in natural ecosystems and their potential as bioindicators, the Spheciformes communities in Portugal (part of the European biodiversity hotspot) have rarely been studied, and data for Por...

Distribution patterns of Astragalus in the old world based on some selected sections

The geographic distribution of Astragalus L. (Fabaceae) was analyzed using a database of 12377 geo-referenced observations. In the old world (including Asia, Africa and Europe) there are ca. 2900 euploid species classified in 166 distinct sections. In this study using geographic information system (GIS) by means of DIVA-GIS (ver. 4) distribution map of some more important sections in the old wo...

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)

The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...

Distribution Patterns and Endemism of the genus Onosma L. (Boraginaceae) in Central Alborz

The evaluation as well as data banking of distribution patterns are considered as the most important management action for the conservation of biodiversity. Iran is considered as one of the most important of diversity centers of Onosma L. and includes a high rate of endemism. Due to the lack of adequate data on conservation and distribution patterns of the genus at local scale, the current stud...
